Long-running OS to be rebranded as Nokia Belle

Following the launch of its first Windows phone, the Lumia 800, Nokia is buttressing its tight ties to Microsoft by dropping its long-running operating system, Symbian.

Handsets running the OS have been disappearing from the shelves in the US and we're about to see an update that will introduce a whole new brand. Symbian's latest iteration was known as Symbian Belle – as seen in the Nokia 700 – and now Nokia will simply refer to the OS as Nokia Belle.

Devices currently running Symbian will soon be able to download Nokia Belle, and the OS will ship on Nokia's new smartphones that aren't running Windows Phone.

While this is clearly an attempt to distance itself from the beleaguered Symbian, we still very much expect Nokia to concentrate its future efforts on the Windows Phone platform.
