APP WATCH: Sony Music Unlimited heads to iOS

13 January 2012

Music streaming service takes aim at Spotify

It launched for Android devices back in June, but there has been no word on Sony Music Unlimited heading to Apple devices since. Presumably because there's already serious competition in that market. But all that has changed with the announcment that Sony Music Unlimited for iOS is arriving in the fairly near future.

Some time in the first quarter of 2012 is the approximate date, which could be anytime from today until the spring. When it does land, Music Unlimited will offer a similar service to the Android one, with a subscription (basic or premium) getting you access to around seven million tunes for £3.99 or £10 respectively. The bigger fee offers on-demand music, not unlike Spotify.

In fact, that's likely to be Sony's biggest competition. Like Spotify, you can shell out around £10 to play tunes either online, or offline as cached playlists. So who would go for Sony? Fans of Sony, that's for sure, especially those who have invested in other Sony kit and want to use their subscription across multiple devices. That might not be a significant number, but it will probably be enough to make Sony's investment in the app worthwhile.

When it launches in the UK, you'll be the first to know.
