Updated smartphone geared towards extreme sports enthusiasts

If extreme sports or indeed, surfing, happen to be your thing, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Active Billabong edition could be for you.

'Billabong brings a new, enthusiastic and engaging audience who are early technology adopters and influencers in the areas of sports and technology,' said Stephan Croix, VP Head of Global Marketing Creation for Sony Ericsson. 'This partnership is a perfect fit with our brand and the Xperia range of smartphones.'

At its heart is the Xperia Active, a phone that launched back in June of last year, which at the time was geared towards fitness enthusiasts. What's changed? If you read through the product specification, a surprisingly small amount outside the looks.

We're still talking a phone that's dustproof and water-resistant, not to mention scratch-resistant too, all good features if you love some extreme sports. It's also got wet finger tracking, again, a big plus for its purpose. Aside from that, there's a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera and the Reality display with Bravia Engine. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is the operating system.

What's new are Billabong back covers (in two colours), pre-loaded Billabong screenscavers, videos and Billabong LIVE, a mobile app now available in the Sony Ericsson channel in Android Market, as well as an exclusive surf game, Billabong Surf Trip.

The initial launch of the phone is in New Zealand, where it sells for NZ$399. No news of UK sales as yet, we'll let you know as soon as they are announced.
