Nokia Lumia 800 battery update - tested06 February 2012
We've fallen in love with Lumia again, but some users are reporting issues
The Nokia Lumia 800 was sleek enough to convert us to Windows Phone, but like a delicious chocolate cake laced with monkey spit, something just didn't seem right. That thing was battery life. On release, the Lumia 800 barely made it through 24 hours even with minimal use - that is, until the long-awaited Nokia update was rolled out over the past two weeks.
If you own the Lumia 800, the update should be ready and waiting according to Nokia's original time guidelines. Your phone should automatically tell you when the update's available, but you'll need to hook it up to your computer and use the Zune software to perform the update. If you haven't had this message, go to Settings > Phone Update to double-check. We've heard reports from some users who still haven't received the update, and we've contacted Nokia to get a time estimate for these Lumia 800 customers.
We upgraded our handset last week and the difference we've personally seen is remarkable. After exactly 24 hours of moderate use - plenty of texting, emailing, web browsing and the occasional short call - we've still got 48% of charge remaining. Like Martin O'Neill replacing the floundering Steve Bruce, the change has been outstanding*.
However, it seems that not everyone who installed the update is so chuffed. We've seen reports on Twitter and on Nokia's forums that some users have experienced worse battery life since updating, although it's a comparably small number so far. Again, we've contacted Nokia to see if it's received many complaints and we'll update when we receive a response.
