Symbian smartphone intended to replace point and shoots
Nokia has unveiled that update to the N8 all right – a gigantically megapixeled Symbian phone that packs a 41-megapixel lens.
The 808 PureView was teased last week, but no rumour suggested its lens was quite so ginormous (officially the only word left to describe a phone that trumps a DSLR, at least on the numbers game).
The lens protrudes a fair way from the matt polycarbonate body and comes with a flash and autofocus – we’ll confirm later the exact specification of the flash.
It runs on Symbian Belle rather than Windows Phone, as it has been in production since before Nokia hopped aboard the Microsoft train. Nokia says it will use the camera tech in future Windows phones – a good move if the Lumia 800’s lackluster performance is standard for its successors.
Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices, said, "People will inevitably focus on the 41 megapixel sensor, but the real quantum leap is how the pixels are used to deliver breath-taking image quality at any resolution and the freedom it provides to choose the story you want to tell."< The Nokia 808 PureView will be available in May.
