UPDATED: Samsung launches Galaxy Beam (with photos)

Projector smartphone displays HD video up to 50 inches across

No press conference for Samsung but that’s not stopping a flurry of handset announcements. The Galaxy Beam is a phone with projector built in, running on Android Gingerbread and packing a rather modest 1GHz dual-core processor (at least in comparison to the quad-core super-devices floating around).

The built-in projector operates at a 15-lumen brightness and chunks up the handset to a fairly reasonable 12.5mm thickness. A preloaded app lets you manage the phone like a projector, to send any digital media to a giant wall for friends and family to marvel at.

A larger than most 2000mAh battery suggests the phone will be able to handle all that projecting without dying any faster than its smartphone peers.

Other specs include a standard four-inch WVGA display, 8GB of memory expandable by microSD slot, and a video player supporting H.264, MPEG4 and DivX, so most downloaded video should play.

The Beam will also work with a speaker dock for audio to match your projected video.
