Claims that next Android OS will also need high-res display
We know it's a confusing business keeping up with the Android operating system and its variety of names and numbers, but it looks very much like the forthcoming Android Honeycomb will draw a line under things with strict hardware rules for devices wanting to use it.
According to Android Community, the next version of Android, also going by the name Android 2.4, will require devices using it to have on board a dual-core processor and a screen with a resolution of 'at least' 1280×720.
According to Bobby Cha, the managing director at Korean company Enspert, Honeycomb will actually require a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor to run 'properly'. All of which hints that the new OS will be aimed primarily at tablets. New tablets too because, if it's true, something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab might not be allowed to run it. Bad news of one appeared in your Christmas stocking.
We have seen Honeycomb in action already, courtesy of a Motorola tablet, which was shown off by Google's Andy Rubin at a recent presentation and previous rumours have indicated that 2.4 will be geared towards tablets, some of which might be shown off at the rapidly-approaching CES event. So not long to wait to find out if it's all true. The launch of Honeycomb itself is still a few weeks off though - it's expected to be showcased at February's Mobile World Congress show in its own right.
