Manufacturer confirms first Honeycomb Android tablet
Ok so it might not have taken us by as much surprise as the ATRIX, but the Motorola XOOM is still a welcome addition. The first tablet device to run on Google’s new Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system was announced at CES in Las Vegas, and is the first OS to be specifically built for a tablet platform. Featuring a 10.1-inch widescreen HD display, the Motorola XOOM features a dual core processor that both run at 1GHz simultaneously.
Flip the device over and you’ll find a five-megapixel camera that can capture HD DVD-quality video, while the two-megapixel front facing camera can ensure video calls over Wi-Fi or even 3G. The Motorola XOOM can also handle flash video, while the inclusion of an HDMI output means users can connect the device to a larger screen if 10.1-inches doesn’t quite cut it.
The Motorola XOOM is also fitted with the latest Google Maps 5.0, complete with 3D mapping credentials, while consumers will have access to over three million eBooks and thousands of other apps from the Android Market.
Though the finishing touches are being applied to the software, Motorola assures us that the XOOM will be arriving in Q1 of this year.
