Mass market 3D smartphones come a step nearer reality
Some sleuthing from Tech Eye has conjured up the existence of the Nvidia Tegra 2 3D chip, which could mark a whole new direction for smartphones. Yes, another one.
It's not been seen in action (yet), but the site has managed to find a slide destined for use at this year's Mobile World Congress. That slide announces the chip and its availability this year for smartphones, which is surprising given that the existing Tegra 2 chip isn't exactly mass market yet.
The Tegra 2 3D is intended for use in mobile gadgets featuring a 3D screen, so could perhaps run alongside the Tegra 2. It's apparently based on a Dual Cortex A9 clocked at up to 1.2 GHz, with compatible mobile handsets believed to use a Master Image TN-LCD display using cell parallax, a technology using the individuals cells to create a 3D effect instead of a parallax barrier, as Nintendo will be using in its 3DS console. That's the science, but let's sum it up by saying the phones will offer 3D-like imagery without the silly glasses.
It's interesting and likely to 'wow' the media at the MWC trade show. But will it have mass market appeal at a premium price? Only time will tell on that one.
