Typewriter maker turns hand at mid-priced Android tablet
Best-known for typewriters and office kit, Olivetti is looking to make a splash in the tablet market, launching the OliPad. Well, is was always going to be that of the oPad.
According to Engadget, this is 'Italy's first tablet', offering up a 10-inch screen, 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity, an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Android 2.2.2 for the operating system (no, sadly Android Honeycomb didn't make the cut) and a 1024 x 600 display. There's also USB and HDMI ports and a 1.3-megapixel camera on-board. Not great, but not bad overall.
The OliPad sells for 399 Euros online or for an equivalent amount at your local Olivetti stockist. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff, but the company is attempting to create a niche for itself in its traditional market by launching an 'Application Warehouse'.
Apparently that is 'a virtual storehouse of configurable and customizable software applications designed by Olivetti specifically for business and government.' That could be where the real money is for the company going forward. If you want an OliPad, it should be available from this week.
