Sony confirms Android tablet for summer

05 April 2011

Honeycomb device heading to US market first. UK for Christmas?

We did hear rumours of this back in February, but the Sony Android tablet is rumour no more - the company's CEO has just confirmed it.

Sadly, Howard Stringer done nothing more than confirm it, so we're still left with the envelope-like artist's impression for the image. However, if the tablet is coming 'before the summer is out', as Reg Hardware reports, the leaked images are almost certainly going to be coming thick and fast as the weather gets warmer.

Mr Stringer did confirm that the device is an Android Honeycomb tablet, presumably the same S1 tablet that's been subject to previous leaks. If so, that means a 9.4-inch device with a customised Sony interface that will be based around Qriocity, Sony's music, games, ebooks, and videos on demand service and with Sony PS One games pre-loaded. A Bravia Media Remote, and a similar PlayStation Suite to the one seen on the recent Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, should also be present.

Previous rumours have also suggested an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. front- and rear-facing cameras, a USB-A port for USB thumb drives or media devices and a high gloss finish. According to another story from Nikkei, US customers will gets hands-on first, with a launch on that side of the Atlantic ahead of Europe. We will hopefully see it ahead of Christmas. Or at least, that's what we're hoping.
