Android 2.3 update in UK in coming weeks

Launched around a year ago with Android 2.1, the Samsung Galaxy S smartphone has proven good value for Android buyers, upgrading to Android 2.2 within months of the launch and now, it would seem, it is getting an Android 2.3 upgrade.

On that trusty modern-day source of Twitter, spotted by IT Pro Portal, the Three network posted an update confirming that an Android 2.3 update for the Samsung Galaxy S is 'expected in the next couple of weeks', although the network added that it 'cannot confirm a date'. So you'll just have to sit tight for now. It's a decent turnaround though, as the Three network only rolled out the 2.2 upgrade at the end of 2010.

Obviously that's only the only network confirming as yet, but if it's possible for one, there's no reason why the others will hold back from a similar update. With the follow-up handset, the Samsung Galaxy S II, delayed until sometime in May (at least, that's what we're led to believe), it might mean that the old hand will be first to show off the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. There are some decent deals around for the original Galaxy S too, so it might be a shrewd investment too if cash is tight.
