Leaked pictures just ahead of unveiling today show new dual-core Android 2.3 smartphone

Remember the HTC Pyramid? Well, it's launching as the Sensation, a dual-core smartphone that was meant to be officially unveiled at an HTC press conference at 1.30pm today (Tuesday).

While LG, Samsung and Motorola all announced dual-core goodness in their flagship smartphones at this year's CES and MWC conferences, HTC showed off smartphones that seemed more stop-gap than stop-traffic.

Well, now we know why. The HTC Pyramid we reported on is real – to be known as the HTC Sensation – and it will indeed pack a 1.2GHz dual core processor (yes, that'll theoretically be a tad faster than 1GHz dual chip sported by the LG Optimus 2X, Samsung Galaxy SII and Motorola Atrix), 4.3-inch SLCD touch-screen, 4GB of internal storage, plus two cameras – an eight-megapixel snapper with dual-LED flash and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel lens for video calls.

Some rumours pegged it with an Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, but considering HTC's Flyer tablet will launch sporting 2.3, that's unlikely.

Expect a 2.3 Gingerbread phone with HTC's new Sense interface – but we'll have more information at the official press conference in just a couple hours.
