O2 confirms exclusive on HTC Salsa

Despite Amazon taking orders for sim-free handset

Remember we mentioned that both the HTC Salsa and ChaCha are available to order right now at Amazon? Well, the former is actually an exclusive on the O2 network. We're not sure of the technicalities of the deal, but those two facts don't sit well together.

According to TechRadar, O2 has confirmed that it has exclusive rights on the more expensive of the two Facebook phones, following on from a post on retailer Clove's blog that read: 'The HTC Salsa will launch in the UK as an O2 exclusive and as of yet there is no indication as to when

if it will be available SIM-free.'

Obviously Clove wasn't aware of Amazon taking pre-orders for the sim-free phone with a June 26 selling date. The price of one is £319.99. Interestingly, the order page is still there, but the shelf date has actually been brought forward, Amazon now promising you a sim-free Salsa on Monday June 6. So if you want to go sim-free, it looks like Amazon is very much offering you that option. If you want a contract, you'll have to go down the O2 route - get in touch with them to get your name on the list or wait for the contract prices. If that June 6 date is for real, they should be along in the next week or so.

For your money, you'll get that deep Facebook integration, HTC Sense, Android 2.3, a 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch display, 5-megapixel camera, VGA video calling camera, a 600 MHz processor, 512MB of memory and the option to boost storage via microSD memory card. For the full lowdown, check out the details from the launch day here.
