Get a phone, Wi-Fi tablet and tethering between the two
Three new tariffs from Carphone Warehouse could be making it cheaper to get online with mobile devices. Marketed as 'tethering' deals, they're being sold with phone and tablet combos and allow you to use the handset's 3G connection to get the tablet online. Tethering on Android has been available since version 2.2 (Froyo) but quite often data tariffs charged extra for it.
The bundles are specific to certain hardware. £31 per month will get you a Samsung Galaxy Tab and a Galaxy Apollo phone, you can have a Blackberry PlayBook and a Curve 9300 for £36 per month or an Archos 101 and a HTC Wildfire S for £31 per month. They're not the most cutting edge mobiles available, but still tidy tech at a pretty good price.
Carphone Warehouse has done its sums too. A YouGov poll has found that Android users are twice as likely to tether their tablets than folk with iPads, though it's recognised that Google doesn't charge while the iOS does. The research has also found that only 9% of tablet users currently tether on their handsets, a figure that will surely go up with the new deals.
