iPhone 4S sells 4 million in first weekend

18 October 2011

25 million people now using iOS 5 too

Remember last week and that painfully slow download, not to mention the glut of error messages? That' probably because you were one of around 25 million people trying to access the latest Apple operating system, iOS 5.

Yes, a staggering number worldwide are now using the new platform, according to Apple's latest figures. Not all are using iCloud though, with 5 million choosing not to bother with Apple's wireless backup and storage system. But that's still an impressive take up. Just as impressive are the sales of the iPhone 4S.

Despite some negative opinion, not to mention people saying that this is the iPhone upgrade they'll skip, Apple has still managed to shift 4 million iPhone 4S handsets in its first weekend of trading. That's despite the handset only being available in US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK so far. The iPhone 4S will be available in 22 more countries on October 28 and more than 70 countries by the end of the year. You can only imagine the total sales figure as we enter 2012.

'iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,' said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. 'iPhone 4S is a hit with customers around the world, and together with iOS 5 and iCloud, is the best iPhone ever.'

Well done to Apple for getting a healthy amount of stock out for the launch too. The company has obviously learned from past lessons. Indeed, the iPad 3 is already said to be in production ahead of an expected March launch, so there shouldn't be a big shortage of those either, when it does finally land.
