Next-gen Android tablet will pack quad-core chip

Uh, what? With none of the fanfare accompanying certain other tablets we could mention, the jawdroppingly powerful Asus Transformer Prime tablet has been unveiled by ASUS head boy Jonney Shih.

Why are our jaws on the floor? Because it's the first mobile-related device to come with a quad-core chip - a NVIDIA Tegra 3 to be exact - along with a 10-inch touch-screen, miniHDMI out, and to top it all off, it's just 8.3mm thick, out-skinnying the current thinnest tab, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 by 0.3mm. In techland, that's throwing down the gauntlet.

Like the Eee Pad Transformer before it, Transformer Prime is an Android tablet and can slot into a keyboard dock that will charge it as it goes. There's no word on the exact version of Android, though according to Engadget, Shih said he expects the recently unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich to be on all tablets by year end - so perhaps the Transformer Prime will pack this rather than Honeycomb 3.0 before too long.

The official unveiling of the Transformer Prime is November 9, but no ship date has been announced.
