Ice Cream Sandwich coming to UK handsets

Twitter once again is first with the news. The news of the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android heading to Samsung Galaxy S II smartphones in the UK.

Yes, the Mobile Choice phone of the year will be even more desirable in the future, when it gets an OS upgrade, which should be like getting a new phone. Especially if you've had yours for a number of months already. The official Samsung account Tweeted: 'Hi, good news – the Galaxy S II will be receiving ICS, but there are no dates confirmed as yet. We will keep you posted.'

Shame that there wasn't a date, but I think we can work that out. Previously, Samsung in Italy confirmed there would be an upgrade program for its key handsets, but there was no comfirmation of those updates hitting UK phones. When that story broke, the company talked about the second quarter of 2012. It's likely that Italian and UK rollouts aren't going to be all that far apart. So expect your 'new' phone from around spring next year.

The delay is probably down to the company getting the operating system to work with its own TouchWiz interface, as well as all the testing required before the update can be unleashed into the wild. You can also factor in some serious network testing too, which might delay things a little longer. But at least you know the update is coming and once Christmas is out of the way, the wait isn't going to be all that long.
