Microsoft Office heading to iPad?

30 November 2011

Company 'actively working' on tablet version of software

Anyone who sees the iPad as a mere plaything might think very differently if Microsoft Office lands on the iPad.

And it's heavily rumoured to do so too. According to The Daily<

em>, Microsoft is 'actively working' on such a thing, which could be a very profitable venture for the company. Although, saying that, the new Office software will certainly be cheaper than buying for the PC or Mac, being an app. The price being quoted right now is $10 (to compete with similar Apple products), so expect to pay £10 when it finally makes it to the UK.

Details are scarce, but it will obviously be a heavily-adapted and lightweight version of the business

productivity software, probably working in conjunction with the Office 365 'cloud' version of Office to keep the file size down. We should know more sooner rather than later. Microsoft is working on full versions of Office for Mac and Windows 8, but they are not due until the end of 2012. However, The Daily<

em> claims the iPad version 'could come well ahead of that date'.

With an iPad 3 due in the first quarter of 2012, that could be perfect timing for Microsoft to make a killing in the app market.
