APP WATCH: 7Digital for Windows Phone

07 December 2011

Alternative to Spotify and iTunes offers music downloads for listening across multiple devices

Music download store 7Digital will soon be available for Windows Phone, on version Mango or newer.

Like iTunes, 7Digital allows you to browse, preview and purchase tracks from the 17 million-strong 7Digital library.

You can listen to 30-90 second previews of tracks before you buy them, and if you're downloading over 3G, the app will automatically compress tracks into a lower quality MP3 format until you're in a Wi-Fi zone, when you can then upgrade to a full 320kbps file.

Downloaded tracks can then be synched and accessed from other devices, with 7Digital already popular on BlackBerry and preloaded on certain Samsung Android phones.

While Spotify charges a monthly fee for all-you-can-eat access, 'owning' a track is a little more complicated, with the ability to download playlists only for Premium subscribers and no option to sync these playlists for offline access across other mobiles or desktop.

So 7Digital could be an interesting option if you don't want to buy into the iTunes machine, but like the idea of having the rights to an MP3 file that you can transport between devices.

'We're continuing to see demand from customers for access to their music on all their devices, regardless of the manufacturer or operating system. With the launch of our Windows Phone app, we're continuing to work towards the realisation of our vision to provide anytime anywhere access to music for our customers', comments Ben Drury, 7Digital CEO.

7Digital will be available for free 'in 2012' from the Windows Marketplace. Or check it out on BlackBerry and Android now.
