Best Cameraphones for 2012

Our top three phones for photos, boasting the best cameras money can buy

If your mobile takes dull, blurry shots, it's definitely time to upgrade - after all, the latest handsets rival compact cameras for clarity and colour. Not only can you take rich, vibrant photos, you can also upload them in an instant to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. It's best to show a little restraint though - perhaps the world isn't ready to see your best friend throwing up that jug of Sangria.

Here's our guide to the very best mobiles for taking photos:

•Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S

The original Xperia Arc boasted an excellent camera, and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S builds on that solid groundwork with its 8.1MP lens. Photos are crisp and colourful even in adverse conditions, with a nippy shutter speed for spontaneous snaps. You also get a nifty new 3D panoramic photos feature. This allows you to take sweeping landscape shots, which can then be exported as three-dimensional images to 3D-enabled televisions, although it can be a little fiddly to operate.

•Nokia N8

Although it's getting on a bit, the Nokia N8's 12MP lens, complete with xenon flash and auto-focus, is one of the best we've used. Combining top quality with relevant features (including ISO and White Balance), this snapper is the envy of many modern smartphones. You still get occasionally ropey results in low-light situations, but the chunky flash helps out considerably so you won't end up with a photo of blurry silhouettes.

•Apple iPhone 4S

The meat of the Apple iPhone 4S hardware upgrade is the 8MP lens with LED flash and an f

2.4 aperture that enables better low-light photography than previous models. It still struggles in particularly dingy pubs and restaurants, but the flash helps considerably without turning subjects yellow and daylight shots are impressively bright and crisp, beating most standard compacts. You can also shoot True HD video at 1080p and 30fps.

Honourable Mentions: HTC Sensation XE, Samsung Galaxy SII, LG Optimus 3D
