Developers get iOS 5 Beta 4

25 July 2011

Over-the-air updates get a run out for the select few

That launch of iOS 5 gets ever closer, with iOS 5 Beta 4 now offered to developers and packing one of the headline features of the new operating system – over-the-air updates.

Essentially, that means you'll not have to go through the hassle of attaching your iPhone to a computer and booting up iTunes to grab the latest updates from Apple. The downside for developers right now is the fact that an over-the-air update will delete all your photos, so you'll need to do a physical update to get them back. Not ideal and something unlikely to be there when the feature does land in finished form. At least, that's what we hope.

The new update will also offer Wi-Fi synching of your content, as Apple starts its big push towards cloud computing. According to 9 to 5 Mac, this isn't just for Mac users. iPhone owners with both Mac and Windows computers will be able to opt for Wi-Fi synching. When you plug in your phone, you'll be given the option to do just this instead or having to dig around for your wire.

More on this when iOS finally arrives, which is a matter of weeks, if rumours are to be believed. September is widely predicted.
