Facebook takes aim at BBM's dominance
It has been one of the biggest selling points for BlackBerry smartphones for many years. But the dominance of BBM could be threatened by the arrival of Facebook Messenger on the platform.
According to Pocket-lint, the new app even offers new features to sweeten the deal, including the option to see who's online and who's on mobile, the ability to see when the other person is typing and easier messaging to those you communicate with most.
That's on top of basic messaging to friends and family, logging on conversations for future reference, location mapping, and the ability to message groups and mobile contacts. Yes, even non-Facebook friends can be 'messaged' although this will be via text message.
Obviously Facebook Messenger will have to win over a loyal fanbase, especially amongst younger users, who have taken the cheap platform to their hearts. Basically, they're already using it and so are their friends, so why change? But Facebook Messenger is cross-platform and covers the huge number of Facebook users, which is way in excess of BBM use. That could win out in the end.
